Classes That Integrate Writing and Drama Across Curriculum Areas!

 

Stage Works Theatre is celebrating it’s 9th season by offering exciting, new classes for After-School Enrichment Programs.  StageWorks staff has been integrating drama into other curriculum areas for over 25 years, providing performances, drama and writing residencies and staff developments to teachers and students in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia.  Here is a sampling of what StageWorks Theatre can do for your students.

 

Workshops can be designed to meet individual needs.  Below are some of the most popular classes we offer.  All classes are designed to meet North Carolina curriculum needs, but can be adjusted to fit specific curriculum requirements.  All classes designed to strengthen sequencing, listening comprehension, problem solving and build writing skills.  As theatre is a basis for curriculum and methods.

TUMBLER TALES

Recommended for grades 2-5

 

Watch a child’s imagination come to life as they open a tumbler filled with wonderful objects used to create a story (imaginative narratives).  Students are asked to write stories using the fun filled tumblers.  The stories are then presented to the group by student actors.  Tumblers can be created to fit specific themes, i.e. science, math, history or students can create their own tumbler to write a personal narrative.(1 hour workshop) 

 

 

FABLE FACTORY

Recommended for grades K-5

 

Using Aesop’s Fables like “The Hare and Tortoise” and “The Grasshopper and the Ant”  students will write stories, play games, and draw in order to explain all those far out fables we live by everyday.   Aesop won’t have anything on these creative students after we’re done.  Integrates Language Arts and Drama.(1 hour workshop)

 

SECRETS REVEALED

Recommended for grades 4, 5 and 6-8

 

What could a seashell, an old map, and an ancient statue have in common?  Your students will find out when they let their imagination run wild.  Using items from history, science, or any area you choose students will create collages and stories for sharing specific to the time or place it comes from.  Watch the students get caught up in secrets that show up(1 hour workshop).

CANDID CAMERA

Recommend for grades 2-5 and 6-8

 

Learn to act and perform in commercials, westerns and sitcoms.  Script writing and TV lingo make this class a #1 choice!  We’ll add music and special effects to make the shows even more exciting.  We’ll make a video and students will be able to receive a copy for their family.  Additional fee required to copying and distributing video.(2 hour workshop)

Drama Classes

 

LET'S MAKE A PLAY 

Recommended for grades K-8 (creates a performance for parents and classmates)

 

Aspiring actors and actress will have the opportunity to create their own play.  Using improvisation and theatre games students learn the basics needed to create a play.  Then, in just two short weeks, the play will be presented to friends or family.  The performers will be limited only by their imaginations.  The productions may focus on Holiday or well known tales and fables.(8 hour minimum)

 

HOGWARTS AFTER SCHOOL

Recommended grades 2-5

 

Harry Potter is all the reading rage and this lesson comes with fun games and stories to act out, all in Harry Potter style.  Jump on board the Hogwarts express for excitement and a class you’re students will be talking about for days to come.(1 hour workshop)

 

CHARACTER EDUCATION FROM A TO Z

Recommended for grades K-5

 

“Do unto others as you have them do unto you.”  This old proverb and many others will be used to help students understand and learn to live by the wisdom of  Proverbs.  Your student’s participation is a must in our character education creative drama lesson.  Character traits such as Responsibility, Kindness, Integrity, Courage, Self-discipline, Responsibility, Honesty, Citizenship and School Pride are just a few of traits we can present.  The lesson is presented with humor and can create some lasting memories for your students.(1 hour workshop)

 

POLISH UP YOUR POETRY IN SHEL SILVERSTEIN STYLE

Recommended for grades 2-5

 

Using Shel Silverstein’s whimsical poetry as a basis for our poetry lesson, poetry will come to life.  We’ll write our own wacky poems and act them out.  Poetry is an exciting way for children to express their feelings and thoughts.(1 hour workshop)

 

 

NORTH CAROLINA:  MYTHS, MYSTERIES AND LEGENDS

Recommended for grades 2-5.

 

Great tie to North Carolina social studies! 

Students will hear tales from the mysterious hoof-prints at Bath, the Brown Mountain lights, and even the Bunkers, North Carolina’s famous Siamese twins, who worked for P. T. Barnum and many more.  We’ll use these tales for drama games and fun galore.

 

FAR OUT FAIRY TALES

Recommended for grades K-5

 

Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Billy Goats Gruff never sounded like this before.  Students will create their own far out fairy tales using familiar tales as a jumping off point.  What a mind blowing experience.(1hour workshop)

 

A WALK IN JURASSIC PARK

Recommended for grades K-4

 

Little folks will be ready to journey to dinosaur country.  Dino games and action stories to thrill every student.(1 hour workshop)
